The history of higher education in Debrecen can be traced back to the 16th century. Established in 1538, the Reformed College of Debrecen played a crucial role in education, promoting Hungarian culture and language not only in the region but throughout the country. It quickly became the most significant cultural hub in Hungary, nurturing numerous writers, scientists, and politicians.
During the 18th century, the schools of Law and Theology were established, and although there was no separate School of Medicine at the time, physicians were trained within the College. In 1908, the Calvinist Academy of Humanities was founded, followed by the establishment of the Hungarian Royal University in 1912. This laid the foundation for the University of Debrecen, which boasts the longest continuous history among higher education institutions in Hungary.
The University of Debrecen integrated the Theology, Law, and Arts faculties of the College, and later added a medical school. Teaching commenced in 1914 within the premises of the old Calvinist College buildings, with the official inauguration of the University taking place on October 23, 1918.
In 1921, the university was named after István Tisza, a former prime minister of Hungary. By 1932, the university's main building, designed in an eclectic and neo-baroque style, was completed, becoming one of the largest structures in the city.
In 1949/1950, the University underwent restructuring under communist rule. The main objective was to divide the university into smaller, less influential entities and eliminate units that did not align with the political agenda. Consequently, the Faculty of Medicine became an independent university under the Ministry of Health until 2000, the Faculty of Theology returned to the Calvinist College, the Faculty of Law was dissolved, and certain teaching staff were expelled from the University.
