Overview about Hungarian University of Fine Arts

The Hungarian University of Fine Arts (known as Magyar Képzőművészeti Egyetem, MKE, in Hungarian) serves as the primary hub for artistic education in Hungary. Situated on Andrássy Avenue in Budapest, it traces its origins back to 1871 when it was established as the Hungarian Royal Drawing School (Magyar Királyi Mintarajztanoda). In 2001, it assumed the title of University of Fine Arts.

Prior to the mid-19th century, Hungarian artists sought their artistic education in academies across Western Europe. It was the National Society of Hungarian Fine Arts (Országos Magyar Képzőművészeti Társulat), established in 1861, that advocated for the creation of a Hungarian institution dedicated to the fine arts.

As a result of this movement, the Hungarian Royal Drawing School and Art Teachers’ College (Magyar Királyi Mintarajztanoda és Rajztanárképezde) was inaugurated in 1871. The existing university building, constructed in 1877, was the brainchild of architects Alajos Rauscher and Adolf Lang.

Over the years, the university expanded its curriculum to include not only painters and sculptors but also artist-craftsmen, mosaic and gobelin artisans, stage designers, costume designers, and restorers. Eminent Hungarian artists played a pivotal role in shaping the institution, with influential figures such as Károly Ferenczy, János Vaszary, Viktor Olgyai, Róbert Berény, Aurél Bernáth, Jenő Barcsay, Márta Lacza, and Béni Ferenczy, among others, contributing their expertise as instructors.
