On February 16, 2002, UMPSA was founded by the Malaysian government as a public technical university. It was established as a technical university specializing in engineering and technology under the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971 by the Royal Decree of His Majesty the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong. The university college is currently operating on a temporary campus in Gambang, Pahang, which was previously an industrial complex owned by Malaysia Electric Corporation (MEC). The university's permanent campus is currently under construction in Pekan.
