Before 1983, the area now known as Samarahan District was referred to as Muara Tuang subdistrict, with the town itself being called "Muara Tuang". However, on 19 August 1983, Muara Tuang was given a district status and a new name, becoming Samarahan District.
Alongside this change, the town within Samarahan District was also renamed to "Kota Samarahan". Later, on 24 July 1986, Samarahan Division was formed by merging the Samarahan, Serian, and Simunjan districts.
Kota Samarahan is known as Kota Ilmu (town of knowledge) after the first public university in Sarawak, the Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) established in 1992.
The Bruneian Empire expanded its territory to include the Samarahan area in 1364, during the reign of King Awang alak Betatar. Fast forward to 1853, and the area was relinquished to James Brooke by Sultan Omar Ali Saiffudin II, who granted him the title of Raja of Sarawak. In exchange, James Brooke paid 1500 dollars to the Sultanate as cession money, which was subsequently increased to 4500 dollars per year from 1861 onwards.
