    Test Format for OET

    The entire OET exam is divided into four sections, the Listening section, which is 50 minutes long and consists of 3 parts; the reading section, which lasts 60 minutes and is divided into 3 parts; the job-specific writing section, in which candidates are required to write a letter of recommendation, and finally the final section; the speaking section that requires the candidate to play a healthcare setting.

    OET Sections

    Each section is scored individually and the overall score is the average of the score achieved in each section. Also, all sections have a pre-set standard pattern to ensure reliable and fair evaluation of all candidates.

    OET listening Section::

    With a total duration of 45 minutes, the listening subtest consists of a total of 42 questions, which are divided into 3 parts. Candidates would hear the recorded speech once and answer the questions as they did so. The overall duration of the exam would cover topics of general health concern in all health professions.

    Part A (advice excerpts)

    For the first task, health professionals would need to gather specific information during a consultation. Candidates would have to fill in the health care professional’s notes from hearing the two recorded consultations between health care professionals and patients.

    Part B (short workplace excerpts)

    For the second task, the candidates would have to listen to several recorded excerpts, which can range from team meetings, handovers to discussions between doctor and patient, and answer a multiple-choice question for each excerpt. In the second part, the candidate is tested for identifying details from brief excerpts from the health workplace.

    Part C (excerpts from the presentation)

    The third and final task of the listening section would require candidates to listen to multiple pre-recorded presentations or interviews on a range of accessible health topics and answer multiple choice questions for each extract.

    Section on reading OET

    With a total duration of 60 minutes, the reading section consists of 42 questions, which are divided into 3 parts. Candidates would have to answer the question about generic health-related topics.

    Part A (Quick Reading)

    For the first task, candidates would have to read four short essays and find specific information from the texts. The essays made available to candidates relate to general health topics. Questions can vary from matching the following, sentence completion, to questions with short answers.

    Part B (Careful Reading)

    For the second task, candidates would receive several short texts on general health topics, and candidates would be asked to identify key points and answer multiple choice questions. The essays can cover topics ranging from guidelines, hospital guides, manuals, emails, memos to internal communication.

    Part C (Careful Reading)

    For the third and final task, related to the “Reading” section, candidates would need to identify the detailed meaning of the topic provided to them and answer several questions about it.

    OET Writing Section

    With a total duration of 45 minutes, the Writing section requires a letter from the candidate, usually a reference letter in his / her area of expertise. The candidate receives background information on their assignment, which they may or may not include in their reference letter. This particular job is job specific so while a nurse would have to write a special letter for nursing, a dentist would have to write a special letter for dentistry.

    Speaking Department

    With a total duration of 20 minutes, the candidates have to individually re-enact their professional role in real scenarios in a professional health environment. In a job-specific exercise, the candidates have to role-play their job, while the panelist plays a patient in the first part and the roles are reversed in the latter. Candidates have 3 minutes to prepare for each page before the start of each act. The role-playing games are essentially based on simulated workplace situations that reflect the mood of the healthcare sector. Candidates would be given enough background information to prepare for their role-playing games.

    Scoring System:

    For each of the sub-test that count up the OET exam , students receive a numerical score of 0-500 in 10 point increments. For example : 350, 360, 370 and so on.

    A 450-500 Can communicate very fluently and effectively with patients and health care professionals using the appropriate registry, tone, and dictionary. Shows complete understanding of any type of written or spoken language.
    B 350-440 Can maintain interaction in a relevant health care setting despite occasional errors and omissions and follow the usual spoken language of his or her area of   expertise.
    C+, C 300-340, 200-290 Can maintain some interaction and understand simple factual information in his / her area of   expertise, but can ask for clarification. Frequent mistakes, inaccuracies and misuse or overuse of the technical language can lead to a burden on communication.
    D 100-190 Can maintain some interaction and understand straightforward factual information in his/her field of specialisation, but may ask for clarification. Frequent errors, inaccuracies and mis- or overuse of technical language can cause strain in communication.
    E 0-90 Can handle simple interactions on familiar topics and understand the gist in short, simple messages if he / she can ask for clarification. A high density of errors and incorrect or excessive use of technical language can lead to considerable stress and disruptions in communication.
    OET Eligibility

    OET Test Eligibility Criteria:

    Eligibility Criteria of an exam depends on multiple factors based on which candidates are judged/examined whether they are eligible for taking the exam or not. These can be any of the following- Age, Nationality, Educational Qualification, Reservation Policy, etc. Candidates who are willing to apply for OET 2021 exam must go through the eligibility criteria mentioned below:

    CBLA has not mentioned any specific age criteria for the candidates who are willing to appear for the OET examination.

    Educational Qualification

    CBLA has not set an educational qualification for the candidates to appear for the OET exam. Students who are willing to work in the health care sector are eligible to apply for the exam. Candidates must note that the exam is accepted by the healthcare professionals in the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Ukraine, Dubai, Singapore or Namibia.

    OET Listening Section

    A total duration of 45 minutes, the Listening consists of a total of 42 questions parted into 3 parts. Students would each hear the recorded speech once and would be expected to answer the questions while at it. The total duration of the exam would include dealing with topics of generic healthcare interests across all Medical Students.

    OET Reading Section

    As a total duration of 60 minutes, the Reading section is made up of 42 questions, divided into 3 parts. Students will require to answer the question of generic medical related topics.

    OET Writing Section

    A total duration of 45 minutes, the Writing section needs the students to write a letter, usually a letter of reference in his/her field of specialty. The stiudent will be provided with background information to his work which he may or may not incorporate into his reference letter. This particular task is work-specific, hence while a nurse would have to write a letter specific to nursing a dentist would be required to write a reference letter specific to dentistry.

    Speaking Section

    With a total duration of 20 minutes, students are needed to individually enact their professional role in real-life scenarios in a professional medical environment. A profession-specific exercise, students are required to roleplay their profession while the panelist plays a patient for the first part, and the roles are reversed in the latter. Students are given 3 minutes to prepare for each side before the start of each act. The roleplays are basically based on mock workplace situations that reflect the mood of the medical environmement. The students would be given enough background information to prepare for their roleplay sessions.

    OET Results

    Candidates who have appeared for the exam can check their results on myOET portal. The exam is conducted every month, so the authority also announces the results after 15-20 days once the exam is over. OET results are available in the form of a scorecard. The scorecard contains all the essential information related to the candidate. It is advisable to keep the scorecard safe until the admission process is completed.
